Health Services

The Seneca Nation Health Department (SNHD) provides comprehensive health services to the following designated areas: Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Niagara, and Erie (excluding the Tonawanda Reservation) Counties in the State of New York, and Warren County in the State of Pennsylvania. Health services are offered to all those persons within the HSDA (Health Services Delivery Area) defined as eligible under federal and tribal guidelines. Services have been available since the SNHD was established in the late 70's.

The two primary facilities are the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation Health Center (CIRHC) and the Lionel R. John Health Center (LRJHC) that opened in the Fall 1993, and provide the various health care services offered through the SNHD. SNHD facilities also include a satellite program office in Buffalo, NY, that offers limited services similar to those offered at the Reservation Health Centers, administrative offices located within the LRJHC in Salamanca, NY, and offices for a Child & Family Services Program (on the AIR), including a boarding home (located on the CIR).

The SNHD operates two community health centers that provide comprehensive primary care in the treatment and prevention of acute and chronic illnesses and/or injuries to all service-eligible Native Americans. The health program consists of five major components: Medical, Dental, Community Health, Human Services, and Contract Health Services.

These components provide the following range of services: family health care, prenatal care, health maintenance and prevention screenings, well baby and child care, laboratory, pharmacy, nutrition and dietary counseling, family planning, health education, mental health and substance abuse counseling, outreach and environmental health.

Supplemental urgent care is provided on a referral arrangement and contractual basis when a patient/client's needs cannot be met at the health centers. Services are provided by a multi-disciplinary team of health professionals including staff physicians, pharmacists, clinical nurses, a family nurse practitioner, a physician assistant, medical records professionals, and other additional support staff.
